by (anonymous) — last modified May 03, 2007 05:28 AM

Do you start every morning with a cup of coffee… or two? Who grew your java? Were they paid enough to live? What would it look like if we knew who made our coffee… literally? Join Rohs Street Café and University Christian Church as we thank our Guatemalan Growers. The celebration is a variety of events such as music concerts from over 15 bands, coffee tasting, kids activities, and learning seminars to shed light on the importance of Fair Trade and seeking trade justice. For more information go to www.rohsstreetcafe.com or email us at fairplayfest@gmail.com. All Fair Play Fest proceeds will be used for the coffee farmers and community of Santa Maria de Jesus, Guatemala.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Cincinnati, Ohio- On May 10th – 12th 2007, Rohs Street Café and University Christian Church will be hosting Fair Play Fest to raise funds for the coffee farmers of Santa Maria de Jesus, Guatemala.  The celebration will include a variety of events such as music concerts from over 14 bands, coffee tasting, kids activities, and learning seminars to shed light on the importance of Fair Trade and seeking trade justice.

The festivities will begin Thursday night with the introduction of La Armonia Hermosa, a single-origin coffee from the farmers of Santa Maria de Jesus, Guatemala.  This agrarian village is seated high on the slopes of a volcano and is home to 20,000 people, 97% of which live in poverty.  In partnership with La Terza Artisan Coffee Roasters of Cincinnati, Rohs Street Café has been working directly with the farmers of this village to help them build a cooperative organization, improve their coffee quality and gain access to the American market for their coffee.  “This is giving coffee farmers who have historically been oppressed by unjust free trade systems and who have not yet been a part of the benefits of the Fair Trade system an opportunity to step out of the cycle of poverty.” says Les Stoneham of Rohs Street Café.  “This is the first year of the project and we’re excited about the commitment to quality the farmers already have and their motivation to grow the project in the community over the coming years” he adds.  Integral to these farmers’ success will be their ability to process their own coffee from growing new trees to drying and transporting the finished coffee to the coast.  The funds raised from the festival will go to help them build the infrastructure needed to do this.

Friday night features Blue Jordan Records celebrating their 11th birthday.  Gracing the stage will be David Wolfenberger, Janet Pressley, Lines and Spaces, Liz Bowater, Greg Mahan and many more.  As part of last year’s 10th birthday bash, Blue Jordan helped raise initial funding for Rohs Street’s coffee project in Guatemala.  “We are glad to come back a year later and see the progress these farmers have made and are excited to be a part of raising more funds to help them make a greater impact in the community” says Tony Moore of Blue Jordan Records.

Saturday is World Fair Trade Day, and Rohs Street is starting the day off with a variety of free learning seminars on topics dealing with Fair Trade and trade justice.  “These workshops offer a great opportunity for people to become better informed on the issues and find ways to take action themselves” says Brandie Atkins of University Christian Church.  Presenters include Tony Moore of Moore Labs, Julie Prezybysz of Ten Thousand Villages, Carol Gessing of St. Ursula Academy, Boler and Diana Castellanos of Santa Maria de Jesus, and Les Stoneham of Rohs Street Café.  The day will finish with a full night of music from an array of great local music from Brandon Dawson, Pomegranates, Paris in the 1920’s, Loft Co., For Algernon, and many more.

Tickets for the festival are available at Rohs Street Café, Ten Thousand Villages, Brutopia Coffee, Blue Manatee and on the Enjoy the Arts website.  For more information including parking locations, ticket pricing and complete band listings and seminar topics visit www.rohsstreetcafe.com.
