Oxfam America Hunger Banquet event
On November 21st, the weekend before Thanksgiving, students at Niantic Community Church will join the nation’s oldest and largest anti-hunger movement, with an Oxfam Hunger Banquet. These youth will provide a meal to guests of all ages based upon tickets that are selected randomly at the door. Each of these tickets will assign a high-, middle-, or low-income tier that will connect with corresponding meal representative of that income level. The 15 percent in the high-income tier are served a sumptuous meal. The 35 percent in the middle-income section eat a simple meal of rice and beans. The 50 percent in the low-income tier help themselves to small portions of rice and water. These statistics used in are based on the World Bank Development Indicators 2007. At the end of the meal, all guests are invited to share their thoughts on the experience. Money raised from the events will go to Oxfam America, an international relief and development organization that creates lasting solutions to poverty, hunger, and injustice.
